Cowgirl Granola comes to us straight off a San Antonio ranch from a woman who feels her roots as a cowgirl were a fantastic inspiration for the namesake of her nutritious creation. Starting out at her local farmer’s market, Heather Hunter began selling her homemade granola after it was such a hit with family and friends as a gift. After the success at the Farmer’s Market, she launched her website to sell the eight blends of loose granola and individual bars to the rest of us hungry non-Texans.
The Original Stock Cowgirl Granola is made with a mix of organic oats, almonds, cashews, Texas pecans, walnuts, raw organic pumpkin seeds, raisins and ground organic flax seed. The blend is then seasoned with brown sugar, a hearty scoop of cinnamon, vanilla bean paste and a dash of salt for balance.
The different blends from the Original Stock vary based on the dried fruit added to the mix – choose from dried cranberries, dried cherries, dried blueberries or orange-spiked dried cranberries to replace the raisins. Heather also makes special holiday blends around Christmas, Thanksgiving, the 4th of July and two special blends in honor of local San Antonio festivals.
Not a fan of dried fruit? Try her P-Nut Butter granola bar! She even recently launched a Wild Honey blend that uses honey sourced locally to sweeten the granola in place of the brown sugar. Plus, Cowgirl Granola also comes in a certified gluten-free oats blend for those trying to manage Celiac and other gluten-free diet conditions.
Cowgirl Granola is unique in that its made with no oils, high fructose corn syrup or ingredients we can’t pronounce – my personal rule of thumb for choosing wholesome, nutritious packaged foods! It has no saturated fat, 7 grams of unsaturated fats and almost 5 grams of each protein and fiber in a quarter cup serving. The unsaturated fats come from the variety of nuts and seeds present in the granola and are important for a healthy heart and play a role in helping to lower LDL cholesterol.
As with other granolas, Cowgirl Granola makes a great snack on the go. Stash a bag in the car or in your desk at work for a quick pick me up when hunger strikes. For breakfast, mix a scoop of granola with a bowl of your favorite yogurt and some fresh fruit for a protein packed, fiber filled meal to start your day off right.
I was lucky enough to sample two of the Cowgirl Granola blends – Orange Cranberry and Blueberry. Both were crunchy, with just the right amount of cinnamon to add flavor without overpowering the natural taste of the oats and nuts. The granola remained crispy while the dried fruits were still the right amount of chewy to add texture and sweetness to both blends, even after being shipped to me in Virginia. I found myself munching on it as an afternoon snack and even added some to my morning oatmeal for an extra crunch!
